Queen Alexandra and the Art of Photography and Treasures from the Royal Library

9th October 2004 - 25th April 2005

Queen Alexandra, the consort of King Edward VII, was a talented artist and the most celebrated royal photographer of her time. Her interest in photography began in 1885, after George Eastman presented her with one of his new roll-film cameras. Over the next 20 years she went on to take part in several Kodak exhibitions. Queen Alexandra's photographic albums, often embellished with exquisite watercolour decoration and annotated with impromptu anecdotes, are unique personal diaries that provide a fascinating insight into the lives of the royal families of Europe from the 1880s to the First World War. The display, which marks the publication of Developing the Picture: Queen Alexandra and the Art of Photography (Royal Collection Publications), includes the Queen's Kinora, an early machine for viewing short films. It is shown alongside a selection of Treasures from the Royal Library, including drawings by Leonardo da Vinci and Hans Holbein.

Tour - Great Kitchen to State Apartments

Windsor Castle - Disabled Information
Wheelchairs are available free of charge at the entrance to Windsor Castle for use only within the grounds, though they cannot be pre-booked. Toilets for the disabled are also provided. We are told that the staff are excellent, making sure wheelchair users knew the best way to get round and helping with the lift, etc. Wheelchair access is not possible however to the Semi-State Rooms.
One visitor reports: "As soon as one of them [a member of staff] saw the wheelchair they would come over and ask how we were managing and check if we needed any help - it was one of the most helpful experiences either of us have had. I am going to write to the castle administrators to say that the staff were excellent and to pass on our thanks." Jeane

Nearby, Wetherspoons pub and restaurant "King and Castle" has wheelchair access and toilets for the disabled.

Parking. We have yet to discover the ideal solution to the problem of parking for the disabled in Windsor as there is nowhere really close to the castle, and being on top of a hill, some inclines are inevitable. We suggest the King Edward Car Park at the end of Arthur Road which offers disabled parking spaces above Level 4, which reduces the need to negociate inclines. Disabled parking is also available opposite the Taxi Rank in Thames Street, located beyond Queen Victoria Statue and Guildhall in the High Street. Entry to Thames Street at 'river level', by Windsor Bridge, is not permitted, it is necessary to drive around the town and enter from the eastern, Long Walk, side.
