Ellen MacArthur: Allein um die Welt im TrimaranEllen Interview am 19.12.2004 - suedlich von Afrika The last 24 hours was given over to the approach of a low weather system from the west. We've had a good night of sailing with good speeds. Sadly this morning, the weather's been playing up - it's been very changeable... The breeze has been down to 15 knots then up to 25 - I'm hoping its going to increase once more - it should be blowing 25-30 knots maybe even with gusts of 40. Right now, we've got a lot less wind than that, so fingers crossed it will return.
Right now, we're north-west of Marion Island, we're about 250 miles north of the Antarctic convergence and we're heading just north of east at the moment. The seas are a lot flatter than they have been but they are due to build again towards this evening and stronger winds tomorrow so it is going to get fairly hairy again fairly soon, so now is a good time to rest. Did manage to get into my bunk on three occasions last night which was quite special.
We're ahead of Francis by nearly 24 hours after three weeks and its good to have a lead on him. But the weather situation ahead does not look fantastic with a light area of winds coming up which we're going to have to try and negotiate around and if we lose a few hours it would not surprise me whatsoever.
